R. Gregg Cherry

Robert Gregg Cherry (17 October 1891-25 June 1957) was the Democratic Governor of North Carolina from 4 January 1945 to 6 January 1949, succeeding J. Melville Broughton and preceding W. Kerr Scott.

Biography[]

Robert Gregg Cherry was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1891 and raised near Gastonia, North Carolina. He commanded a volunteer artillery company during World War I before serving as his town's mayor, in the state legislature, as an accomplished lawyer in his town (reputed to be his town's best lawyer when sober and second-best when drunk), and Governor from 1945 to 1949. He was the last of the Governors affiliated with Oliver Max Gardner's conservative political machine, and he focused on improving mental healthcare at state-run institutions. He surprisingly supported Harry S. Truman's 1948 re-election bid, and he died in 1957.
