Quintus (135 AD-) was a Roman general who served as Prefect of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Commodus.
Biography[]
Quintus served in the Roman Army as Maximus Decimus Meridius' second-in-command, and they fought in the Marcomannic Wars under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. In 180 AD, Quintus took part in Maximus' final victory over the Germanic tribes, and, that same year, he was ordered by the new emperor Commodus to have Maximus arrested due to Maximus' refusal to swear allegiance to him. Quintus then became Prefect of the Praetorian Guard, the emperor's elite bodyguards. He was motivated to serve the emperor solely by duty, and not out of hatred for Maximus, and, when Maximus fought against Commodus in the gladiatorial arena in 192 AD, Quintus had the Praetorians refuse to give the disarmed Commodus a sword. Maximus then proceeded to slay Commodus before dying of his wounds, and Quintus had Maximus buried and had Senator Gracchus reinstated.
