Queens is the easternmost and largest borough of New York City, located in western Long Island and to the north of Brooklyn. Queen's County was established in 1683 as a county of New York, and it was named for Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II of England. Queens was incorporated into New York City as a borough in 1898, and it would become the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world during the 21st century as several hundred thousand immigrants from across the world came to Queens; in 2015, 48% of Queens' 2,339,150 residents were foreign-born. In 2000, 44.08% of the population was white, 20.01% African-American/black, 17.56% Asian, 11.68% other races, 6.11% multiracial, .5% Native American, and .06% Pacific islander, with 24.97% of respondents identifying as Hispanic.
