Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel (27 August 1878-25 April 1928) was a Russian White Army general who commanded the army in the Caucasus during the Russian Civil War.
Biography[]
Born to a Baltic German family in Kovno Governorate (present-day Lithuania) in the Russian Empire, Wrangel joined the Life Guards cavalry as a reserve officer in 1902 and two years later fought in the Russo-Japanese War. After graduating from Nicholas Imperial General Staff Academy in 1910, he fought as a cavalry officer in World War I in Galicia during the Brusliov Offensive and other combat. Promoted to Major General in January 1917, he was later arrested by the Bolsheviks after the Russian Revolution and escaped to lead the pro-monarchy White Army in the Caucasus during the Russian Civil War. He fought well but he was doomed when the Soviets stopped warring with the Poles in 1920 and an offensive in the Crimea drove him out of Russia and he was evacuated on British ships. He moved to Turkey, Tunisia, and died in Brussels, Belgium.
