The Puerto Rican Nationalist Party (PNPR) is a nationalist political party in Puerto Rico, founded on 17 September 1922. The party did not have any concrete views apart from independence, and the PNPR was responsible for nationalist agitation for much of the first half of the 20th century. The party favored direct armed conflict against the United States government as a means to acquire independence, but the rise of the US-friendly Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico passed a gag law in 1948, suppressing the PNPR. In 1950, Pedro Albizu Campos ordered armed uprisings in several towns, and the PNPR even attempted to assassinate President Harry S. Truman on 1 November 1950. In 1954, four party members shot and wounded five congressmen in its last attack, and the party dissolved into faction after Albizu Campos' 1965 death. The PNPR would continue to exist as an informal grouping of nationalists, while Los Macheteros and the FALN would rise in popularity as nationalist groups.
