The Public Gaol is a historic building in Colonial Williamsburg. It served as Virginia's chief prison, housing debtors and prisoners while serving as the jail for the General Court in the nearby Capitol. In 1718, Blackbeard's captured pirates were confined at the gaol until the day of their hanging.
