The Province of Posen was a province of Prussia and the German Empire that existed from 1848 to 1918, when Poland gained independence and took over much of the region. The provincial capital was Posen (Poznan), and the province replaced the semi-independent Grand Duchy of Posen. The province was ceded to Poland under the Treaty of Versailles following the end of World War I.
