Pronghorn Ranch was a ranch in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, located 4 miles south of Rangely. The ranch was founded in the early 1900s by David Geddes, and, in 1907, the former outlaw John Marston (under the pseudonym "Jim Milton") was hired as a ranch hand after helping Geddes' overseer Tom Dickens fight off Laramie Gang thugs who had been sent to intimidate Geddes into selling his ranch to the ranching tycoon Abel Atherton. The Laramie Gang would continue to harass the ranch at Atherton's behest, but Marston helped to fight off the Laramie Gang leader Steven Boggs and his henchmen when they returned. This resulted in harsh retaliation from the gang, which set fire to several buildings around the ranch during a nighttime raid. In response, Geddes sent Dickens, Marston, and the ranch hand Abe Foster to attack the Laramie Gang base at Hanging Dog Ranch, and, in the ensuing shootout, the Laramie Gang was nearly wiped out and the ranch saved from the thugs. Ultimately, Marston's actions earned him the favor of Geddes, who helped him obtain a bank loan which Marston would ultimately use to buy and build a ranch of his own, Beecher's Hope, in Texas.
