Prokne the Poet

Prokne the Poet (died 429 BC) was a Greek mercenary during the Peloponnesian War. She was killed while leading the Athenian army at the Battle of Gortyn in 429 BC.

Biography[]

Prokne the Poet was known for her delightful stories and the way in which she told them. It's said she once created her own poem, and it was the only one her audience didn't like. They didn't live much longer after that, it seems, and Prokne never shared her work again.

In 429 BC, the Athenian strategos Makarias hired Prokne to assist in the defense of Messara from the Spartans. In the Battle of Gortyn, Prokne sought out the rival mercenary Kassandra, only to be slain in battle with her.
