Project Nova was a chemical weapons project started by Soviet general Nikita Dragovich in 1945 with the goal of creating a deadly chemical, Nova 6, that would be released across the United States by communist sleeper cells in every state capitol. The Soviets began the project with the help of the Ascension group of former Nazi scientists, led by Friedrich Steiner, and they conducted numerous tests during the 1960s.

In 1968, the CIA set out to stop the Soviets from carrying out their plan, but the Soviet scientists Daniel Clarke and Steiner were both killed, leaving brainwashed CIA agent and former Soviet prisoner Alex Mason as the only man who knew the location of the numbers station, from which Soviet communications with the sleeper cells were broadcast. After extensive interrogation, Mason remembered that the Soviets were using the commercial ship Rusalka as their numbers station, and the US Navy launched a massive assault on the ship and a submarine fleet supply station in the Gulf of Mexico in February 1968 as the USA was at DEFCON 1, preparing for all-out war with the Soviets. The Americans killed Dragovich and destroyed both the ship and the numbers station, preventing nuclear war between the USA and the USSR and ending Project Nova.
