The Progressive Party of Spain was a liberal political party that existed in Spain from 1836 to 1874. The Partido Progresista rivalled the Moderate Party of Spain for control of the government for much of the 19th century, supporting free trade, a laissez faire economic policy, intolerant religious and social policies, and a militarist foreign policy. The Progressives were socially conservative and fiscally liberal, and they differed from the Moderates only on their trade and economic policies. Under Queen Isabella II of Spain, the liberals supported the government against the Carlist rebels during the First Carlist War, and the liberals were led to victory in battle by General Jose Ramon Rodil. The Progressive Party dissolved in 1874, and it was replaced by the Constitutional Party of Spain.
