Probus (19 August 232-October 282) was Emperor of the Roman Empire from 276 to 282, succeeding Florianus and preceding Carus.
Biography[]
Probus was from Sirmium, Pannonia Inferior and was made Governor of the East under Emperor Marcus Claudius Tacitus. When Tacitus died in 276, Probus' men acclaimed him as emperor, and in 277 he defeated the Goths along the Danube River. In 278 he fought the Longiones and Alemanni in Gaul, and his generals beat the Franks and Burgundii. From 279 to 280 he fought the Vandals in the Balkans, but in 280-281 three usurpers rose up: Julius Saturninus, Bonosus, and Proculus - all three were put down. However, Praetorian Guard commander Carus rose up and Probus was killed in Sirmium by defecting soldiers.
