Principes were a class of soldier in the early Roman Army, consisting of wealthy men in their prime who could afford decent equipment; they often formed the second battle line, behind the young and poor hastati and in front of the wealthier triarii. They were eventually disbanded after Gaius Marius' reforms in 107 BC, with all soldiers being issued standard equipment.
