The Princely States (1721-1949) was the collective term for the 565 Indian states on the Indian Subcontinent, ruled by maharajas subject to a subsidiary alliance and the paramountcy of Great Britain. Many of them became princely states of Pakistan and India, but some existed until the 1970s. They fought against Portugal, Afghanistan, and the Mughal Empire in the 1860s.
