The Portuguese Republic is a country located on the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula of southwestern Europe, with its capital at Lisbon. Portugal was first established as a Christian kingdom in 1139 during the Reconquista, and Portugal became the first global empire after conquering the Azores, Madeira, Ghana, the Congo, and parts of West Africa from the 15th to 16th centuries. The Portuguese also settled in Brazil and India, setting up lucrative colonies. Portugal would remain an empire into the 1900s under the Estado Novo regime, but the Carnation Revolution of 1974 and uprisings in Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and Equatorial Guinea led to the downfall of the dictatorship and the end of the Portuguese empire. Today, Portugal is a developed country with a high standard of living, and it had a population of 10,341,330 people in 2015.
