Porto Pindaré

Porto Pindaré was a Portuguese port village located along the Pindaré River in Maranhao, Brazil during the 17th century. The town was founded in 1643 as the port of Baraceira, and its docks produced several Portuguese Navy warships which fought the Dutch navy for control of the Pindaré; Porto Pindaré was twice attacked by the Dutch, in the 1643 Battle of Porto Pindaré and the 1645 Battle of Ambos Bancos. Porto Pindaré quickly evolved from a single dock and town center to a military base and village with a barracks, Roman Catholic church, a few houses, and wooden walls guarded by several watchtowers.
