The Portland Seven was a group of seven American jihadists from the city of Portland, Oregon who attempted to enter Afghanistan in 2002 to join the Taliban. The original cell consisted of Patrice Lumumba Ford, October Lewis, Jeffrey Battle, Habis Abdullah al-Saoub, Ahmed Bilal, and Muhammad Ibrahim Bilal, while Mike Hawash was counted as the seventh member of the cell. The group was first discovered on 29 September 2001, just over two weeks after the 9/11 attacks, when they were arrested for firing guns at a rock quarry for target practice; they twice failed to enter Afghanistan, leading to the FBI finding out about the cell and arresting six of the members. Saoub was killed in Pakistan in 2003, the only member to die in combat.
