Pope Theodore II

Pope Theodore II (840-1 December 897) was Pope in December 897, succeeding Pope Romanus and preceding Pope John IX.

Biography[]

Theodore was born in 840 AD in Rome, and he was ordained as a priest under Pope Stephen V before being consecrated as pope in December 897 after the death of Pope Romanus. He recognized the validity of the ordinations of Pope Formosus by reinstating those who had been deposed under Pope Stephen VI, and he recovered the body of Formosus from the Tiber River, reburying it in St. Peter's Basilica. He died after a brief reign.
