Pope Sergius V Alcide

Pope Sergius V (16 August 1275-19 August 1316), born Alcide Torrelli, was Pope from 18 October 1314 to 19 August 1316, succeeding Pope Clement V and preceding Pope Alexander V.

Biography[]

Alcide Torrelli was born in Italy on 16 August 1275, and he was a bishop and cardinal before being consecrated as Pope on 18 October 1314 after the death of Pope Clement V. He commanded troops in Homs, Syria during a crusade to recapture Jerusalem from the Mamelukes, but the crusade ultimately failed. On 19 August 1316, Pope Sergius V was murdered on the orders of Francesco d'Este at age 41, and Pope Alexander V succeeded him.
