Pope Nicholas I

Pope Nicholas I "the Great" (800-13 November 867) was Pope from 858 to 867, succeeding Pope Benedict III and preceding Pope Adrian II.

Biography[]

Nicholas was born in 800 AD to a distinguished family of Rome, and he became a deacon early on in life. In 858 AD he was consecrated as pope after the death of Pope Benedict III, and during his reign he worked together with Louis the German of East Francia and Basil the Macedonian of the Byzantine Empire against Emir Sawdan of Sawdanid Emirate and the other Saracens in southern Italy, reinforcing the walls of Ostia. He died on 13 November 867, and Pope Adrian II succeeded him.
