Pope Michael I of Alexandria

Pope Michael I of Alexandria (710-767) was the Coptic Pope of Alexandria from 14 September 743 to 12 March 767, succeeding Theodoros I and preceding Mina I.

Biography[]

Michael was born in Egypt in 710, and he was imprisoned by the Umayyad governor Musa ibn Nusayr. Kyriakos of Makuria marched north into Egypt at the head of 100,000 troops to free Michael, and Michael was released from prison after the Makurian army reached Egypt. He died in 767.
