'Pope Marinus I' (816-16 May 886) was Pope from 882 to 886, succeeding Pope John VIII and preceding Pope Adrian III.
Biography[]
Marinus was born in 816 in Gallese, Rome, Papal States to a priest. Marinus was consecrated as pope after being Bishop of Caere, which was controversial, as it was not expected of a bishop to leave their see. Marinus made the future Pope Formosus Cardinal-Bishop of Portus, and during his reign he was friendly towards Alfred the Great of Wessex, exempting Anglo-Saxons in Rome from taxation.
