Pope Marcellinus

Pope Marcellinus (240-1 April 304) was the Pope from 296 to 304, succeeding Pope Caius and preceding Pope Marcellus I.

Biography[]

Marcellinus was born in 240 AD to Projectus, and he was from Rome. Marcellinus became Pope after Pope Caius' martyrdom in 296, and Marcellinus had to deal with Caesar Galerius' persecution of Christians: Christians could no longer serve in the Roman Army, the Church's property was confiscated, and churches were destroyed. Marcellinus was called upon by Diocletian to perform sacrifice, and Marcellinus did so, but he repented shortly afterwards and professed his faith in Jesus, so he was martyred.
