Pope Lucius II (1075-15 February 1145), born Gerardo Caccianemici, was Pope from 1144 to 1145, succeeding Pope Celestine II and preceding Pope Eugene III.
Biography[]
Gerardo Caccianemici was the son of Orso Caccianemici, and was born in Bologna in 1075. He was elected as pope in 1144, and took the name "Lucius". During "The Anarchy", he sided with Matilda of England against Stephen of Blois, and he recognized Afonso Henriques as the Duke of Portugal. During his tenure as pope, unrest culminated in Giordano Pierleoni founding the Commune of Rome, a continuation of the Roman Republic that had independence for around fifty years. He was mortally wounded in battle with a Senatorial army, being struck in the head with a stone, and he died in February 1145.
