Pope Leo V (840-1 September 903) was Pope from July to September 903, succeeding Pope Benedict IV and preceding Pope Sergius III.
Biography[]
Leo was born in 840 AD in Priapi, Papal States (present-day Aldea, Lazio, Italy). He was not a cardinal priest when he was consecrated as pope in July 903, and was instead just a priest. Leo exempted Bologna of paying taxes, but after two months of his papacy, Leo was captured by Cardinal-Priest Christopher of San Lorenzo in Damaso and thrown into prison. He was murdered by Antipope Christopher that same month.
