Pope John IX

Pope John IX (840-1 January 900) was Pope from 898 to 900, succeeding Pope Theodore II and preceding Pope Benedict IV.

Biography[]

John was born in 840 in Tivoli, Papal States, and Pope Formosus ordained him as a Benedictine monk. In 898 he was consecrated as pope after the brief reign of Pope Theodore II in December 897, and during his reign John consecrated a metropolitan and three bishops for the Church of the Moravians, who wanted to have a hierarchy of their own as the Holy Roman Empire threatened their existence. He died in 900 AD.
