Pope Innocent V (1225-22 June 1276), born Pierre de Tarentaise, was Pope from 21 January to 22 June 1276, succeeding Pope Gregory X and preceding Pope Adrian V.
Biography[]
Pierre de Tarentaise was born in 1225 in Moutiers in the Tarentaise Valley of the County of Savoy, part of the Kingdom of Arles. He joined the Dominican Order and in 1273 Pope Gregory X made him a cardinal. Tarentaise was consecrated as pope on 21 January 1276 after the death of Gregory X, and he reigned as pope for five months and a day. He died on 22 June, and he was succeeded by Pope Adrian V, who only reigned for a few months; hence 1276 was the Year of Four Emperors.
