Pope Gregory X (1215-10 January 1276), born Teobaldo Visconti, was Pope from 1 September 1271 to 10 January 1276, succeeding Pope Clement IV and preceding Pope Innocent V.
Biography[]
Teobaldo Visconti was born in 1215 in Piacenza, Italy, a part of the Holy Roman Empire. Visconti was a member of the Franciscan Order, and from 1268 to 1271 he took part in the longest papal election in history, and he was consecrated as pope to succeed Pope Clement IV. During his tenure as pope he tried to reconcile with Orthodox Christianity in the Second Council of Lyon, which would later be destroyed by Charles of Anjou's ambitions to restore the Latin Empire after fighting the Byzantine Empire. Gregory died in 1276, beginning the Year of Four Popes.
