
Pope Clement III (1130-20 March 1191), born Paolo Scolari, was Pope from 1187 to 1191, succeeding Pope Gregory VIII and preceding Pope Celestine III.
Biography[]
Paolo Scolari was born in 1130, and in December 1180 he became the Cardinal-Bishop of Pallestrina. In 1187 he was elected as pope, and that same year, the Crusader States were defeated at the Battle of Hattin by the Saracens. In 1189 he pushed Richard of England, Philip II of France, and Frederick Barbarossa to take part in the Third Crusade against Saladin to recapture the city of Jerusalem; in 1189 he made peace with Frederick. He died in 1191.
