Pope Celestine II

Pope Celestine II (1071-8 March 1144), born Guido di Castello, was Pope from 1143 to 1144, succeeding Pope Innocent II and preceding Pope Lucius II.

Biography[]

Guido di Castello was born in 1071 in Citta del Castello in the Papal States, and he was the son of noble Niccolo di Castello. In 1133 Pope Innocent II made him the Cardinal-Deacon of San Marco, and Guido was elected to succeed Innocent as pope in 1143. His tenure as pope was only one year.
