Pope Callixtus I (160-14 October 222) was the Pope from 218 to 222, succeeding Pope Zephyrinus and preceding Pope Urban I.
Biography[]
Callixtus was born in 160 to a family of Romans, and he was enslaved for his conversion to Christianity. He worked in the mines of Sardinia until presbyter eunuch Hyacinthus, a representative of Emperor Commodus' mistress Marcia Demetrias, released him with other Christians. Callixtus became pope in 218 after Pope Zephyrinus' death, but in 222 he was martyred when he was thrown down a well during a popular uprising.
