Pope Boniface II (470-17 October 532) was Pope from 530 to 532, succeeding Pope Felix IV and preceding Pope John II.
Biography[]
Boniface was born in 470 AD to a family of Ostrogoths, and he became the first German pope when he was elected in 530 AD. In 526 AD, Athalric succeeded his grandfather Theodoric the Great as pope, and he was instrumental in securing Boniface as pope. Boniface was selected by Pope Felix IV during his lifetime, but the church ruled that the discussion of succession was not allowed during the lifetime of the pope, and most supported Antipope Dioscorus. Both were consecrated as pope on 22 September 530, but Dioscorus died 22 days later, letting Boniface reign as pope. He reigned for two years before dying in 532.
