
Pope Anterus (170-3 January 236) was the Pope from 235 to 236, succeeding Pope Pontian and preceding Pope Fabian.
Biography[]
Anterus was born in 170 in Petilia Policastro, Calabria, Roman Empire to a family of Greeks, and he was the son of a slave named Romulus. Anterus gained his freedom and became Pope in 235 after Pope Pontian died in exile in Sardinia, and Anterus created only one bishop for the city of Fundi (Fondi, Lazio, Italy). He died in 236, martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Maximinus Thrax.
