Pope Adrian V (1229-18 August 1276), born Ottobuono de Fieschi, was Pope from 11 July to 18 August 1276, succeeding Pope Innocent V and preceding Pope John XXI.
Biography[]
Ottobuono de Fieschi was born in 1229 to the House of Fieschi from Liguria in northern Italy, and in 1243 he was made a chaplain, his first clerical position. He became a Cardinal-Deacon under Pope Innocent IV in December 1251, and in 1265 he mediated between King Henry III of England and the Barons' Alliance during the Second Barons' War. Under the influence of Charles of Anjou, Fieschi was ordained as pope on 11 July 1276, but he died after a month and a week.
