The Polish People's Republic was a communist regime that ruled Poland from 1944 to 30 December 1989. The republic began as a provisional government set up by the Soviet Union after the liberation of Lublin, and the Polish United Workers' Party was established in 1948. On 22 July 1952, the republic drafted its constitution, but Poland would remain a Soviet puppet for several decades. In 1945, Soviet generals and advisers provided 80% of the Polish Army's officers, while 500,000 troops would be stationed in Poland in 1945 (just 40,000 by 1989). In 1989, a popular uprising led to the fall of the communist regime. In 1990, Poland had a population of 37,970,155 people.
