Polemon of Armenia

Polemon of Armenia (died February 333 BC) was the Achaemenid Satrap of Armenia during the 4th century BC. In 334-333 BC, he led a large army from the Armenian Highlands into Bithynia amid a major counterattack by the Persians against Alexander the Great's Macedonians, facing off with Alexander's general Balakros in the Battle of Kale near present-day Alapli, Turkey. In the ensuing battle, Polemon's army was trapped in its own fortified camp and nearly destroyed, and Polemon escaped with only a fourth of his original army. Polemon was only able to withdraw a dozen miles east when Balakros' army caught up and destroyed the Armenian remnants; Polemon was slain and Armenia deprived of its main field army.
