The Pokanoket are a Native American tribe in present-day Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Led by the Massasoit Ousamequin, the Pokanoket were the leading tribe of over 60 tribes, sub-tribes and clans in SE Massachusetts before the European arrival in 1620. The Pokanoket helped the English Pilgrims with planting crops and living in North America and signed a six-point non-agression treaty that lasted over forty years. The sachem Massasoit's son Metacomet succeeded his father in 1662, and Metacomet led the Wampanoag into "King Philip's War" against the English from 1675 to 1676. After the war, the Pokanoket identity was criminalized in New England. Today, the Tribe has over 300 members who are taking back their identity and their history. See SowamsHeritageArea.org.
