Plainview was an oil drilling camp in Luna County, New Mexico, located just across the Rio Grande from Mexico, 20 miles west of Columbus, and 12 miles northeast of the Mexican town of Emiliano Zapata, Chihuahua. By the 1890s, it consisted solely of a single oil derrick and a few tents in a field, but, by the 1910s, Plainview had become a major oil drilling settlement with several tents erected to house workers, and several large timber oil derricks being built to extract oil from the ground.
