Place Charles de Gaulle

The Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly known as the Place de l'Étoile, is a twelve-way road junction in Paris, France. Originally known as the Butte Chaillot after the locality of Chaillot, it served as the convergence of several hunting trails before the roads were paved into a star in 1777, hence its name Place de l'Étoile, meaning "Square of the Star". From 1806 to 1836, the Arc de Triomphe was built at the center of l'Étoile. In 1970, following the death of President Charles de Gaulle, the Place de l'Étoile was renamed the "Place Charles de Gaulle" in his honor.
