Piper Farm

The Piper Farm is a historic farm located on the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, Maryland. During the 1862 Battle of South Mountain, Confederate generals James Longstreet and Daniel Harvey Hill used the farm as their headquarters, and Henry Piper, though an ardent Unionist, welcomed his guests with wine. The farm was caught up in the Battle of Antietam days later, serving as a no man's land between enemy lines. The Pipers returned to their farm on 19 September to find the bodies of two Confederate soldiers, and they chased off the Union Army soldiers who had butchered their cattle. The United States government later paid recompense to the Piper family, and the farm remained in the Piper family until 1960. The National Park Service acquired the farm in 1964, and the NPS leased the farm out to farmers who grew its apple orchard.
