Pinckney's Treaty was a treaty signed between the United States and Spain on 27 October 1795 that recognized the USA's control of the Mississippi Territory and gave the USA navigation rights on the Mississippi River. The USA, in exchange, recognized Spanish control over West Florida, which was disputed between the USA and Spain after the American Revolutionary War. The treaty established friendly relations between the two countries, but the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 led to renewed disputes over West Florida and the creation of the short-lived Republic of West Florida.
