Biography[]
Pieter Omtzigt was born to a Catholic family in The Hague, Netherlands in 1974. Omtzigt worked as an economist before entering politics with the Christian Democratic Appeal party, serving as a member of the House of Representatives from 2003. Omtzigt focused on matters of taxes and pensions, and, in 2021, he authored a manifesto calling for the establishment of a constitutional court vested with the power of constitutional review, the institution of a regional electoral system, improved social security measures, and the greater use of think tanks in lieu of research institutes. In January 2021, he helped expose childcare benefits fraud, resulting in the downfall of Mark Rutte's cabinet just two months before a general election; in February 2021, he published his views in a manifesto called A New Social Contract. In August 2023, on the eve of that year's general election, Omtzigt founded the New Social Contract party, whose center-right Christian democratic views and left-wing communitarian ideals attracted voters from across the spectrum and greatly weakened the right-wing populist BBB party, which initially appeared to be on track to sweep the polls.
