
Pierre Chanut (22 February 1601-3 July 1662) was the French ambassador to Sweden and the United Provinces.
Biography[]
Pierre Chanut was born in Riom, Kingdom of France on 22 February 1601, and Cardinal Mazarin dispatched him to serve as ambassador to Sweden from 1646 to 1649. He negotiated the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, ending the Thirty Years' War, and he took part in a 1651 attempt to negotiate an end to the Second Northern War between Sweden and Poland-Lithuania. He returned to Stockholm in 1653, and he became a Councillor of State in Paris in 1655. He died in 1662.
