Pierce Mason Butler

Pierce Mason Butler (11 April 1798-20 August 1847) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 1 December 1836 to 10 December 1838, succeeding George McDuffie and preceding Patrick Noble.

Biography[]

Pierce Mason Butler was born in Edgefield, South Carolina in 1798, the son of William Butler and the brother of Andrew Pickens Butler and William Butler Jr.. He served in the US Army from 1818 to 1829, rising to the rank of captain, and he served as Governor of south Carolina from 1836 to 1838 and as an agent to the Cherokee at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territory from 1838 to 1846. During the Mexican-American War, he was given command of the Palmetto Regiment, and he was killed at the Battle of Churubusco.
