Phyllis Thaxter

Phyllis St. Felix Thaxter (20 November 1919-14 August 2012) was an American actress. Born in Portland, Maine, and a maternal descendant of the Schuyler family, she became a stage actress on Broadway before signing a film contract with MGM in 1944. While she appeared in several films during the 1940s, her most famous role was Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Superman, in the 1978 superhero film Superman. Thaxter was also an active Republican who supported Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1952 presidential bid.
