Phylarchus Phylarchid (354 BC-) was the Tropheus of Sparta under King Areus I in the late 4th century BC. He siphoned funds from the public treasury into his own pockets for years, and he erected extremely flattering statues of himself, giving clues as to who had embezzled the money. In 296 BC, King Areus forced Phylarchus to repay the stolen money, but allowed for him to continue in his position.
