Phineas Hitchcock

Phineas Hitchcock (30 November 1831-10 July 1881) was a Republican US Senator from Nebraska from 4 March 1871 to 3 March 1877, succeeding John M. Thayer and preceding Alvin Saunders. He was the father of Gilbert M. Hitchcock.

Biography[]

Phineas Hitchcock was born in New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York in 1831, and he settled in Omaha, Nebraska in 1857 and became a lawyer and businessman. He served as a US Marshal from 1861 to 1864, as a territorial delegate to the US House of Representatives from 1865 to 1867, and in the US Senate from 1871 to 1877, and he died in 1881.
