Philotas 327 BC

Philotas (died October 330 BC) was a Macedonian general who served under Alexander the Great. He commanded the Companion Cavalry during the conquests of Alexander, only to be executed in 330 BC for plotting Alexander's murder.

Biography[]

Philotas was the eldest son of Parmenion, one of Alexander the Great's most experienced and talented generals. Philotas was in command of a cavalry squadron at the time of Alexander's accession to the throne, but after Parmenion helped Alexander consolidate his power, Alexander awarded his family titles and promotions, making Philotas commander of his Companion Cavalry. Philotas came to be known for his pomp and arrogance, causing frequent tension with Alexander. In 330 BC, during Alexander's campaigns in Afghanistan, Philotas was accused of conspiring against him. Alexander tortured him into revealing the other conspirators before having all of them stoned or speared to death, and he reluctantly ordered the innocent Parmenion's assassination to prevent him from avenging his son.
