Philip La Follette (8 May 1897 – 18 August 1965) was the Republican Governor of Wisconsin from 5 January 1931 to 2 January 1933 (succeeding Walter J. Kohler Sr. and preceding Albert G. Schmedeman) and from 7 January 1935 to 2 January 1939 (succeeding Schmedeman and preceding Julius P. Heil).
Biography[]
Philip La Follette was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1897, the son of progressive politician Robert M. La Follette and the brother of US Senator Robert M. La Follette Jr.. He served as a Lieutenant in the US Army during World War I, and he served as the Dane County District Attorney from 1925 to 1927 before serving as Governor from 1931 to 1933 and from 1935 to 1939. In 1934, the La Follette brothers founded the Wisconsin branch of the US Progressive Party, and La Follette was re-elected on this ticket. Although he was an initial opponent of World War II, he rejoined the Army and served on Douglas MacArthur's staff, supporting MacArthur's 1948 presidential campaign. He died in 1965.
