Philip Durell

Philip Durell (1707-26 August 1766) was a British Royal Navy Vice-Admiral who served in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War.

Biography[]

Philip Durell was born in St. Helier, Jersey in 1707. He joined the Royal Navy in 1721 and served in both North America and Spain during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War, taking part in the attacks on Louisbourg during both wars. He became Port Admiral at Plymouth in 1761 and Commander-in-Chief of the North American Station in 1766, but he died within days of his arrival in North America.
